The Tampa Bay Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic
Founded 1993 by Hector Fontanet, M.D., Adult
Cardiologist and
Richard
Martinez, M.D., Pediatric Cardiologist
The Clinic is a partnership
between
Florida
Medical Clinic and
Pediatric
Cardiology Associates. It is designed to provide expert care and
personalized treatment plans to adult
patients with corrected or uncorrected congenital heart disease and consultative
support and advice to primary care providers, obstetricians and cardiologists
for patients with congenital heart disease undergoing anything from a minor
surgery or dental procedures to pregnancy and delivery and other complicated
surgeries. Even the simplest of medical procedures can be life
threatening to patients with congenital heart disease. For this reason, the
advice of a congenital heart disease specialist is critical because
complications rising from complex congenital anatomies can be anticipated,
prepared for and managed if they occur.
Both
Drs. Fontanet and Martinez are board-certified cardiologists specializing in
non-invasive cardiac diagnosis and congenital heart disease. Both are members of
the
International Society for Adult Congenital Cardiac Disease
and the
Adult Congenital Heart Association. This is the
only clinic
of its kind on the West Coast of Florida.
We are dedicated to providing for the needs of
adult survivors of congenital heart disease through our expert care, close
association with other healthcare providers specializing in the care of patients
with congenital heart disease and providing education to our patients, their
families, our community and healthcare professionals.
Our clinic operates in Tampa, Wesley Chapel and
St. Petersburg, Florida. For appointments or information, please call (813)
929-3516.
Background
Congenital heart disease
is the general term used for any abnormal developments of the heart, heart
valves or great vessels at birth. These malformations can be severe, leading to
physical disability, impairment or death early in life. Over the past 20-30
years, advances in cardiac procedures have made correction of many of these
malformations possible. Patients now are not only able to survive into
adulthood, but also able to live normal functional and productive lives. Because
of the relative rarity and complexity of surgically corrected congenital heart
disease, a new subspecialty of cardiology has developed to provide adult
patients with congenital heart disease the appropriate expertise in their care.
